Stonington Free Library Summer Reading Program 2020 Parent Info
We are excited to launch our Summer Reading Program for 2020! We are committed to providing some sense of continuity for your children and teens, while working to ensure their safety. With these priorities in mind, we will not have any performers or activities in our building for the children, as physical space prohibits social distancing.
Physical books and prizes will be available with curbside pickup and we will be going completely digital for registration, reading time logging and raffle ticket or prize redemption. This is new for all of us and we appreciate your understanding and flexibility. We will have a weekly digital inventory list of prizes available, as well as a virtual catalog of raffle baskets. We will have designated prize pick up times, TBD. I will be your contact for Summer Reading and prizes and as we phase in reopening, you can refer to our website for book curbside contacts. Please understand and attempt to manage your child’s expectations, that ALL prizes are on a first come, first served basis and we cannot guarantee inventory, ever. If I have a question about your prize selections, I will email or text you, (if I have your mobile number). I am using my personal cell, so you may not recognize my number. View me as the SFL Instacart, LOL. Again, we are trying to provide the safest, most enjoyable program we can in this new world. We appreciate your cooperation and support.
We will continue to have three reading programs, divided by grade level. Littles is for children entering kindergarten or younger, Middles for those entering first through fifth grades and Bigs for students entering sixth grade and older. Registration will open on June 15 and we will run the program through August 15. You will register your child in their appropriate age group on our website or by clicking one of the links below.
SFL Littles (entering kindergarten and younger) Summer Registration Form
SFL Middles (entering grades 1-5) Summer Registration Form
SFL Bigs (entering 6th grade and older) Summer Registration Form
How It All Works
All logging will be done through the reading log link you will receive via email after you register.
Littles focus on keeping track of reading time and earning a raffle ticket for each 100 minutes read and a completion prize after 500 minutes. This age-appropriate format makes the experience of reading together a pleasant one with a tangible reward.
The two older groups will earn virtual Dragon Dollars for the time they spend reading (20 minute increments for the middle group and 30 minutes for the older group). They can earn “Dollars” from the time they REGISTER until August 15, when all redemption of dollars will close. We will contact all winners of basket raffle prizes by phone or email the following week.
There will not be a physical store to shop in this summer, but the decision-making that the children can exercise (prize or raffle ticket) encourages higher level thinking with no downside. Please remember that this is “money” they have earned themselves, and the choices they make in spending it are valuable lessons. All prize requests should be emailed directly to me (marisfrey@stoningtonfreelibrary.org) Raffle ticket requests should include the Basket Number(s) your child wants to take a chance on, your child’s name and a phone number. Again, Littles earn 1 ticket for each 100 minutes read, for Middles or Bigs, each ticket costs 2 Dragon Dollars. We will have a Basket Raffle Prize Catalog online to shop, as well as a weekly Prize Inventory List available online.
We encourage reading, but not to the exclusion of all other activities; encourage honest record keeping! The maximum amount of reading time logged per week is 25 hours for Middles and Bigs.
Giving Back
Although we cannot do our usual Read and Feed program this summer, we are stepping up to support our community. We are reallocating funds spent for performers to help support those local businesses who have been loyal supporters of our Summer Reading Program over the years. They have been our heroes for years; it is time for us to give back and stand with them. So look for some surprises in our ever popular Mystery Bags!

We are all in this together,
