THE GREAT AMERICAN READ is a PBS initiative that explores and celebrates the power of reading, told through the prism of America’s 100 best-loved novels (as chosen in a national survey). It investigates how and why writers create their fictional worlds, how we as readers are affected by these stories, and what these 100 different books have to say about our diverse nation and our shared human experience.

These are exciting times at the Stonington Free Library! Two years ago the Board of Trustees launched a strategic planning process. We engaged a highly respected consulting firm to assist us on the most rewarding and valuable part of the planning process—engaging the community. The community’s response to our outreach was overwhelmingly positive and reflected a remarkable level of participation. We look forward to continuing our successful partnership with the community as we implement new strategic initiatives to improve Stonington Free Library’s services and programs. We are grateful for the generous support of the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut whose funding made it possible for the library to create this plan.

A collaboration between the Library, the Stonington Village Improvement Association (SVIA) and Stonington High School has led to the construction and installation of two “Little Free Libraries” at Stonington Point and Mathews Park. Stop by and check them out! They are stocked with free books available for anyone to take, enjoy, and keep!
Our ever popular Summer Reading Program is back! Our theme is Build a Better World for all age groups. Registration opens on Monday, June 19th. The Maker Mart, where participants spend their Builder Bucks for reading, opens Monday, June 26th. We have lots of special programs planned!
Our Annual Children’s Opera has moved from January to July. The Lollipop Opera will perform an interactive original opera, The Fairytale Kitchen.
