THE GREAT STONINGTON READ is the umbrella for our Winter Reading Challenges, 50 to Grow On (ages 7 and younger), Family Reading Challenge (school age) and Read BOLD! (teens – adults). All programs will run December 1 – April 1. We are celebrating reading and encouraging literacy across all ages. Please drop in to register
The Little Free Library movement began in 2009 when Todd Bol built a miniature model schoolhouse, put it on a post in his front yard, filled it with books and put up a
sign stating, “Free Books.” It was a way to honor his mom—a former school teacher— and to share his love of reading with his neighborhood. The idea took off, and now there are thousands of Little Free Libraries and thanks to a collaboration between the Stonington Village Improvement Association, Stonington High School and the Library, we have four of these magical structures right here in Stonington.

Join us at the Library for the afternoon of the Village Stroll and Carol Sing. Beginning at 3 PM, there will be cider and cookies, ornament making for our Christmas Tree and a Polar Express story time at 4:45. Santa will award the “first gift of Christmas” and there will be a treat for all
After reviewing responses from our community survey and focus groups, it is clear that more user-friendly hours are what our community desires. We will be introducing new hours beginning on Monday, August 21.

Our ever popular Summer Reading Program is back! Our theme is Build a Better World for all age groups. Registration opens on Monday, June 19th. The Maker Mart, where participants spend their Builder Bucks for reading, opens Monday, June 26th. We have lots of special programs planned!
Our Annual Children’s Opera has moved from January to July. The Lollipop Opera will perform an interactive original opera, The Fairytale Kitchen. The event will take place at the Stonington High School Auditorium on Saturday, July 15. We are so grateful to our opera benefactor who makes this event possible in our community.
